HISTORIC

ROBLE THEATER & ART GYM

INFO

PROJECT INFORMATION

CLIENT: Stanford University
LOCATION: Stanford, California

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Art Gym at Roble Gymnasium evolved from a student-identified need—a space for non-Arts majors to ‘create art’ for their arts curriculum coursework. An important facet of this program intent is exposure to various artistic media in a single space: students will be able to use the space for dance, vocal and dramatic performance with theatrical lighting, audio and visual recording with green screen technology, as well as an adjacent project shop to accommodate all manner of small scale projects.

This space is located in an historic building, and the existing industrial character will be celebrated by the use. The space is directly adjacent to Arts department rooms which house theatrical, dance and drama programs, increasing the potential for interaction with Arts programming. Within the Art Gym, glazed garage doors and meeting room walls offer visual access to encourage curiosity while providing appropriate acoustical separation. Overall, it is a flexible space to encourage creative space use, exposure to multiple performance and arts media forms, and provide an invitation to explore the arts for students who do not normally have access to Arts department spaces.
