KLUTZ HEADQUARTERS II

INFO

PROJECT INFORMATION

CLIENT: Klutz, www.klutz.com
LOCATION: 450 Lambert Avenue, Palo Alto, California
SIZE: 21,000 Square Feet
COST: $2,200,000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Klutz's continued growth and success required relocation and expansion of their existing headquarters in Palo Alto. CAW had been working with the company for over twenty years and had been instrumental in developing earlier headquarters spaces that reflected and promoted the company's unique culture and image. CAW was engaged once again to assist Klutz with finding appropriate space, and then to design an office environment that reflected the company's business philosophies of employee involvement and creativity.

CAW wove functionality, creativity, whimsy, and sustainability into the new headquarters, and created a comfortable and familiar home for the growing family of employees. Because of its long and intimate history with Klutz, CAW was able to help the company grow and relocate while reinforcing its strong and unique corporate culture.

HOW CAW DID THIS

  • CAW assisted the company in locating and renovating a vacant warehouse that was a former Coca-Cola bottling plant, and navigated a Conditional Use Permit with the City of Palo Alto.
  • The architects organized the space around the four main departments, and created an open "piazza" with bleachers for all-hands meetings.
  • Designing open spaces and conference rooms for all-hands meetings was critical to the company's goal of engaging staff with the company's mission and the products it produces.
  • Incorporating diffuse skylights for ample natural light significantly cuts daytime lighting needs.
  • Utilizing a raised floor system allows for flexibility of the open work spaces and increases thermal comfort of the employees and reduces energy use.
