KLUTZ HEADQUARTERS I

INFO

PROJECT INFORMATION

CLIENT: Klutz, www.klutz.com
LOCATION: Portage Avenue, Palo Alto, California
SIZE: 12,000 Square Feet
COST: $1,200,000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Klutz, the renowned Palo Alto children’s book publishing company is a local success story. CAW began its relationship with Klutz nearly twenty years ago when the publishing company when it operated out of a garage (in true Silicon Valley style.) Klutz's staff size had grown to nearly 60 and they wanted a new and exciting headquarters space that reflected and reinforced the company's image and culture—fun and whimsical, but with teaching and learning as core values.

Working closely with the owner, CAW created a unique and vibrant office environment that expresses the exuberance and whimsy of Klutz's endeavors, and reinforces the company's mission statement: "Create wonderful things, be good, have fun."

HOW CAW DID THIS

  • CAW assisted the company in locating and renovating a vacant warehouse, and navigating a Conditional Use Permit with the City of Palo Alto.
  • The architects organized the warehouse space around a central street that housed shared support functions and conference areas in order to promote interaction between the departments. Chalkboard and Lego walls allow for on-the-spot creativity.
  • Designing open spaces and conference rooms for all-hands meetings was critical to the company's goal of engaging staff with the mission of the company and the products it produces.
  • Incorporating diffuse skylights for ample natural light significantly cut daytime lighting needs.
  • The whimsical atmosphere of Klutz was supported and reinforced by utilizing interesting and unconventional materials like corrugated metal, chalkboard walls, and yellow "umbilical cords" to connect free-standing offices to the overhead mechanical ducts.
